The words "the Med" tend to conjure up pictures of crowded beaches and drunken clubs. It is, then, a real surprise to find out that Discover The Med is a CD-ROM guide to the many impressive ancient civilisations whose ruins lie dotted around southern Europe and North Africa rather than exploring the hotspots of Ibiza. Whether this will turn out to be inspirational or disastrous marketing remains to be seen.
What is certain is that this is first-rate reference software, with passages that have been written by people who really know their stuff. There are some excellent photographs of archaeological finds illustrating the social organisation of the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and the Greeks which give a real sense of the achievements of these peoples. Added to these are sections on society, economy, architecture and religion, all of which round out to give a rich picture of these societies.
The main failing of the package is that the colour contrasts in some of the graphics have been badly thought through, with dark lettering on dark backgrounds occasionally leading to illegibility (fortunately, this is most pronounced in the index rather than in main sections of text). For the rest, this is a very good package that anyone interested in ancient history will enjoy. --Toby Green
